Three Ways To Get Around Catalina Island Once You Get There
Sailing to Catalina Island on a sailboat is a great way to spend a leisurely vacation. The town of Avalon has a lot to offer, and you can also sail around the island where there are few people to get some piece and quiet. However, if you want to disembark and see the town of Avalon as well as the interior of the island, there are also a lot of choices. Here are three ways to get around Catalina to see the most that the island has to offer once you get there.
By foot
The best way to get around is by walking. Just about everything to do in Avalon is within walking distance from the docks. There are stores, museums, hotels, restaurants and other attractions all within a short walk. Most of the town is on a slight slope and easy to walk; however, if you want to travel beyond Avalon, you will have to climb up hills, some of which are steep. If you are planning to hike to the interior, permits must be acquired from the Catalina Island Conservancy, the agency that manages the island's interior.
By golf cart
Though there are regular cars and trucks on the island, most of the roads are narrow and many people find it easier to travel around the island on a golf cart. If you want to drive one of your own, there are places to rent them in Avalon. You can also take a traditional taxi or even a jeep tour if you would rather ride in a car or van. Some of the tours center around a nature theme such as viewing the island's bison or visiting an eagle aviary.
By bicycle
You can either bring your own bike or rent your bike from vendors on the island. If you are a regular bicyclist, then bring your own bike clothes and helmet. There are usually a variety of bikes to choose from depending on what kind of bike you like to ride. Be aware, though, even though mountain bikes are available for rental, you will not be able to use them on dirt trails. If you are bringing your own mountain bike, then you should stop at the Conservancy for a permit which usually has an associated fee.
Sadly, if you want to see the island by horseback, you will not be able to do so. The main public stable on the island closed a few years ago after being on the island for 60 years. In any case, be sure to enjoy the island using one of the three methods listed above. You can also choose to stay on the sailboat and enjoy the view from the water.
